Why accounts
The moment your app needs to know who’s using it.
Every app crosses this line eventually: it needs to know who's using it. People want to sign up, save things, come back and find their stuff waiting. Until your app can tell one visitor from another, everyone's a stranger and nothing sticks.
That's all authentication is: your app's way of saying “I know who you are.” Once it can, everything a person creates gets tied to them, whether that's their settings, their saved items, or their history.
Here's the part beginners get wrong by overestimating it: you will not build any of this yourself. Login systems are one of the genuinely hard problems in software, involving password security, session handling, email verification, and attack prevention. Services like Supabase and Firebase ship all of it, battle-tested and free to start. Your job is one sentence to the agent; the rest of this section shows you which sentence.
